Removing Dog Smell and Washing the Dog Bed Right

With simple home remedies like baking soda and vinegar you neutralise dog smell in home and car instead of masking it. And here is how the dog bed gets really fresh again.

A little dog scent is part of the deal, but it does not have to smell strong. The trick is to neutralise odours instead of masking them with fragrance, and to tackle the main source first. It is usually closer than you think: the dog bed.

First the source, then the rest

Before treating the whole home, look at the textiles the dog lies in. Dog bed, blankets and fabric toys soak up odours like a sponge. If you wash these regularly, most of the problem is already solved. Only then is it worth treating upholstery, carpet and car.

Home remedies that truly neutralise

Upholstery

Baking soda

Sprinkle on carpet, upholstery or mattress, let it work for a few hours, then vacuum thoroughly. Binds odours reliably.

Floor

Vinegar and water

Wipe hard floors and washable surfaces with a vinegar-water mix, the vinegar smell fades as it dries.

Air

Airing

Air out vigorously several times a day, it sounds simple but is the best fix for stale air.

Car

A bowl of baking soda or coffee

Leave an open bowl of baking soda or coffee in the car overnight, it pulls odours from the interior.

Washing the dog bed right

Fresh without irritants

  • Wash cover and blankets about once a week, fabric toys along with them
  • Use a mild detergent, no fabric softener, which can irritate the skin
  • A splash of vinegar in the rinse loosens odours and replaces the softener
  • Remove coarse hair first, otherwise it clogs the filter
  • Let everything dry through fully, damp padding soon smells again

What to watch out for

  • No essential oils or fragrance sprays where the dog lies. Many essential oils are toxic to dogs, and the fine canine nose reacts sensitively to perfume.
  • Avoid aggressive cleaners on surfaces the dog licks or lies on.
  • If the dog itself suddenly smells strong, from ears, mouth or coat, there is often a health reason behind it. That belongs at the vet, not in the washing machine.

Frequently asked questions

What neutralises dog smell best?

Baking soda on textiles and upholstery, vinegar-water for washable surfaces and regular airing. They bind and neutralise instead of just masking.

How often should I wash the dog bed?

About once a week, more often in summer or wet weather. Best to wash fabric toys along with it.

Why no fabric softener?

Fabric softener can irritate sensitive dogs’ skin. A splash of vinegar in the rinse softens the laundry and loosens odours, without any irritants.

How do I get the smell out of the car?

Clean textiles and mats, leave an open bowl of baking soda or coffee inside overnight and air out well.
